Over the years, the best recruiters have seen every trend from scented paper to video introductions. But nothing has flooded inboxes quite like the current wave of “AI-beige” applications. You know the ones: perfectly polished, grammatically flawless, and entirely soul-less.

But these recruiter can spot a “copy-pasted” ChatGPT response from a mile off. It’s not just the vocabulary (stop calling yourself a “passionate visionary” please), it’s the lack of human texture. However, using AI isn’t “cheating”, it’s a tool. The trick is to use it like a research assistant, not a ghostwriter.

Here is how to use AI to land an interview while keeping your personality intact.

1. The 70/30 Rule: Structure vs. Soul

AI is brilliant at structure but terrible at storytelling. Use it to help you organise your thoughts or suggest a logical layout for your CV, but the “soul” of the application must be yours.

Pro Tip: Instead of asking AI to “write a cover letter for a marketing manager role,” try: “Here are three of my career highlights: [List them in rough bullet points]. Help me structure these into a professional cover letter that focuses on my ability to scale SEO traffic.” You provide the raw ingredients; the AI just provides the plate.

2. Ditch the “Robotic” Keywords

Many candidates think “beating the ATS” (Applicant Tracking System) means stuffing their CV with every keyword the AI suggests. While keywords matter, a human is reading it after the machine. If your personal profile sounds like a list of searchable terms, guess what? They’ll lose interest.

Use AI to identify gaps in your experience compared to the job description, but describe those skills through a human lens. Instead of saying you have “excellent communication skills,” write about the time you calmed a frustrated stakeholder during a project delay. AI can’t invent your memories, and those memories are what employers actually looking for.

3. The “Voice Check” Test

AI has a default “voice” – it’s polite, slightly formal, and uses words like “leverage,” “spearheaded,” and “delve.” If you wouldn’t say it during casual conversation, don’t put it in your application.

Actionable Advice: Once the AI gives you a draft, read it aloud. If you find yourself tripping over corporate jargon, delete it. Replace those generic phrases with your own natural vocabulary. Authenticity is about consistency; if your cover letter sounds like a Rhodes Scholar but your interview sounds like a normal human, the “authenticity gap” will raise red flags.

The Bottom Line

Recruiters don’t want a perfect robot; they want a capable human. AI is a fantastic “sparring partner” to help you get past the blank-page syndrome. But remember: AI hasn’t walked in your shoes, solved your office crises, or earned your promotions. Only you can tell that story.
